Protecting 30% of nature by 2030: Siriporn Sriaram and 30×30 Thailand’s challenging mission

Siriporn “Vivi” Sriaram is on a mission to protect 30% of Thailand’s lands, oceans, coastal areas, and inland waters by 2030. The objective originates from the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, agreed upon in December 2022, and formalized in the 30×30 Manifesto signed by 89 entities working on conservation issues in Thailand.

Today, as the cofounder of the 30×30 Thailand Coalition, Siriporn helps coordinate over 140 entities who share the Framework’s goals. It’s a tall order: only 8% of the ocean is protected in some way, so the 30×30 commitment requires quadrupling ocean conservation efforts by 2030.

Khun Vivi, however, is not fazed by the challenge. We talked with her about her work with the 30×30 Thailand Coalition, the lofty objectives they’ve set for themselves, and how we individually can do our part to help them achieve their mission.

What initially inspired you to pursue a career in environmental conservation? What personal experiences have significantly shaped your career in environmental conservation?

My fascination with biology began in high school. Learning how embryos develop into organs sparked a deep curiosity within me. This passion continued into my university studies, particularly during my third-year ecology class. There, I developed a profound appreciation for nature and the people dedicated to its protection.

Back in 2003, an impactful summer spent learning about the ecology and livelihood of the Karen tribe in the mountains of Mae Hong Son, Thailand, further solidified my commitment to this path. The experience solidified my desire to work with an organization like IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), a leader in global conservation efforts.

A few years later, my dream came true when I secured a job opportunity at IUCN Thailand. This role has allowed me to pursue my passion for nature conservation and contribute to meaningful environmental work.

From your perspective, what are the most pressing climate change issues facing Thailand today, and how does the 30X30 Global Coalition address these challenges?

Thailand is experiencing a double threat: extreme weather events like droughts, floods, and unpredictable rainfall patterns are hammering the country, leading to decreased crop yields, increased wildfires, and severe coral bleaching.

The 30×30 Thailand Coalition recognizes this critical link. We advocate that tackling biodiversity loss and climate change must go hand-in-hand. Climate change is a major driver of biodiversity loss, as rising temperatures and changing weather patterns disrupt ecosystems. But the equation cuts both ways: losing biodiversity and natural habitats weakens the environment’s ability to cope with climate change.

The 30×30 Coalition emphasizes that healthy ecosystems, with rich biodiversity, are more resilient to climate shocks. By protecting 30% of land and ocean areas, Thailand can not only safeguard its incredible wildlife but also strengthen its natural defenses against the growing threat of climate change.

In your opinion, what makes the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework Target 3 (to protect 30% of Earth’s lands, oceans, coastal areas, and inland waters by 2030) an ideal goal to aim for? Do you feel this is reasonably achievable?

Achieving the 30×30 goal in Thailand presents significant challenges. Limited funding and uneven public awareness are real hurdles. However, the science behind 30×30 is undeniable. It’s an ambitious but crucial target given the urgency of the climate crisis. The longer we wait, the more resources we’ll need to restore lost ecosystems.

Focusing on what we can conserve now – the “low-hanging fruit” – is a smart strategy. By protecting existing natural areas, we buy time and build a foundation for future restoration. This collaborative effort requires prioritizing the 30×30 agenda as a common goal. The strong political backing of initiatives like Target 3 and the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC) is encouraging.

Yet, translating that interest into regional funding remains a significant obstacle. Simply designating protected areas without financial backing creates “paper parks” with little real protection. Closing the funding gap is essential. Public-private partnerships and local government investment are key to mobilizing the resources needed for successful conservation.

Can you describe your role in the 30X30 Global Coalition and the specific initiatives you are leading in Thailand? What have been some of the significant milestones or achievements of the 30X30 Global Coalition so far?

My journey with the 30×30 Thailand Coalition began in 2022. Building on my role as an advisor for the Campaign for Nature, I helped organize a key event in Bangkok. This event focused on the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and national targets for nature and people in Thailand. We specifically discussed Target 3 and the advantages of Thailand joining the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC), which the Thai cabinet thankfully approved in November 2022.

However, after the GBF endorsement, momentum stalled. Recognizing the need for action, I took the initiative to establish advisory committees. I leveraged my established network to reach out to peers and encourage them to sign the impactful “30×30 manifesto.” This effort resulted in a significant achievement: over 180 entities now endorse the manifesto!

Furthermore, to facilitate communication within the movement, I set up the “Taskforce for Nature Volunteers Thailand” Facebook group. This group boasts over 470 members, fostering a strong community of supporters.

The 30×30 Thailand Coalition has been actively building momentum. Throughout 2023, we organized several meetings. Currently, we’re focused on developing a strategic network and mobilizing resources. This is critical to bridge the financial gap and ensure successful implementation of Target 3.

How far along is the Coalition in achieving the three objectives? (create a knowledge and information-sharing network and platform; support mobilization of biodiversity finance; create and convene taskforces for the implementation of GBF and national biodiversity targets) What obstacles do you feel you need to overcome?

Thailand is demonstrating commendable progress in achieving the ambitious 30×30 goal of protecting 30% of its land and ocean areas. Notably, they strategically selected Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) as their priority action within the Global Biodiversity Framework Early Action support project (GBF-EAS). This strategic approach highlights Thailand’s proactive commitment to biodiversity conservation. In fact, I had the privilege of contributing to this project as a technical coordinator for this GBF-EAS project since late 2023.

Citizen engagement plays a vital role in achieving these ambitious environmental targets. The 30×30 Thailand Coalition embodies this spirit, fostering a collaborative movement where individuals can contribute to the common goal. However, to fully harness the collective power of the Coalition, effective communication and coordination strategies are crucial to motivate and inspire all members to take action.

Currently, the Coalition operates largely on the dedicated in-kind contributions of its members and advisors. While this initial effort has yielded impressive results, securing additional funding would significantly amplify the Coalition’s impact. With increased resources, the Coalition could establish more robust communication channels, organize impactful events and workshops, and ultimately mobilize a broader network of supporters.

Tell us about the partnerships and alliances you’ve been able to build through the 30X30 Global Coalition – what is the value of networking and collaboration in the context of the 30X30 project?

We believe in tackling issues head-on by bringing together diverse stakeholders who share a common goal. This ‘issues-based’ approach fosters collaboration on specific challenges.

For example, to address the threat of invasive alien species, we convened a powerful group. This included NGOs and even religious leaders. Together, we developed a social campaign to raise awareness and build a united front against this ecological threat.

This collaborative spirit extends beyond national initiatives. In Krabi, we launched the ‘Krabi Alliance for Nature and People.’ This alliance unites key players – from environmental organizations to local leaders – in a concerted effort to protect and restore Krabi’s vital coastal ecosystems.

Our recent partnership with Business for Nature (BfN) further amplifies our efforts. As the first Thai organization to join this prestigious global coalition, we now have a platform to connect with forward-thinking companies worldwide, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration to create a powerful movement for a nature-positive future.

Through such collaborative efforts, the 30×30 Thailand Coalition fosters a powerful network of passionate individuals and organizations. This network amplifies our collective voice and empowers us to achieve meaningful change for Thailand’s biodiversity.

What is your vision for the 30X30 Global Coalition by 2030, and what steps are you taking to ensure its success in Thailand?

My vision for the 30×30 Thailand Coalition is ambitious: securing 1 billion THB by 2030 to support critical biodiversity projects. This ambitious goal reflects the urgency of the situation.

To achieve our fundraising goals, we are implementing a five-point strategy:

  • Heightened Awareness: We are actively raising public awareness about the importance of biodiversity conservation and the financial resources needed.
  • Targeted Advocacy: We are strategically advocating key messages to decision-makers in both the public and private sectors.
  • Action-Oriented Collaboration: We are establishing ad-hoc working groups with diverse stakeholders to develop and implement concrete actions.
  • Transparent Communication: We are committed to regular communication, ensuring transparency and accountability regarding fundraising efforts and project results.
  • Scalability: We are strategically planning to scale up successful initiatives to maximize our impact.

Through this comprehensive approach, the 30×30 Thailand Coalition is confident in achieving its ambitious fundraising goals. These resources will be instrumental in protecting Thailand’s rich biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future for all.
